TPSN GOTY :: Best Fighting Game
2009 saw a resurgence in the fighting game genre. Capcom released a new Street Fighter and an updated version of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, the first, full retail, HD Tekken game made it’s appearance and we even got a new one in the form of Blaz Blue. To see what we thought was the best of the best, take a look below.
5. UFC 2009: Undisputed
Well, we discussed it at TPSN towers and came to the conclusion that THQ’s mixed martial arts game was suited to the fighting genre as much as it was the sports one. However, this is the only category you’ll see it in (god, there were some good sports games this year). With the rise in popularity of MMA, in particular the UFC, it was only right we saw a new game based on the sport. It turned out better than many thought it would and actually is a pretty good fighting game. It might not be as traditional as something like MVC2 or Street Fighter IV, but it’s still one fighting game fans shouldn’t overlook.
4. Tekken 6
Namco Bandai released the first, full retail, high def Tekken in the series in 2009, and didn’t disappoint. Long overshadowed by the likes of Street Fighter and the Virtua Fighter series. Tekken 6 sees a return to form for the series and is, undoubtedly, one of the best fighting games released last year. It’s slick presentation, large roster and great gameplay improvements have allowed Tekken to live side by side with other fighting games. It delivers a unique experience, one that shouldn’t be missed.
3. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
After almost 10 years, Marvel Vs. Capcom returned to our consoles. The thing is it’s exactly the same, but that’s why we love it. Capcom’s classic fighter was re-released on the PlayStation Network in 2009 with very few changes. It would’ve been great to get a brand new game or a ‘Turbo HD Remix’ but the game is still great as it is. For the graphics whores out there, there are a few visual filters that can be applied to make the game look sharper, but they’re not really nessecary. This game is as good as it was back in the day. If you liked it then, you’ve no excuses now.
2. Blaz Blue
Blaz Blue is fantastic. As far as fighting games went last year, you wouldn’t go far wrong with this one. The fantastic art style and superb gameplay even got the game it’s own spot at this year’s EVO fighting game tournament. It’s a much loved game that’s bound to spawn a new fighting series to rival the Tekken’s and Street Fighters of this world. Hopefully recognition like this will get someone to finally release it in Europe.
1. Street Fighter IV
It may have been released way back at the start of the year, but you really didn’t think we’d forgot about it did you? Street Fighter made it’s return in 2009 and after much anticipation fighting fans finally got their hands on it. It completely lived up to expectations. Anyone who had played previous games in the series felt right at home, certainly a good thing. The new art is great, all the characters look fantastic and the classic Street Fighter feel is still there. Guess what, it’s back again in 2010 too.
