Ubisoft today answered the prayers of countless fans by announcing a HD-remake of one of their most beloved titles, for release on PSN and XBLA. Beyond Good & Evil was one of the finest titles of last generation, and with number two suposedly still on the way, this makes perfect sense. Despite lackluster sales the game was highly acclaimed by critics and anyone who played it, even making the ‘game of the year’ lists of many places. Players take on the role of a reporter, Jade, working with the resistance movement to unearth an alien conspiracy. The updated version will be same as the game released in 2003, improved with HD visuals, A remastered score, updated character models and textures. Of course, the trappings of trophies/achievements will be added too. Fantastic news for those that missed this first time around and something that’s sure to please fans. It follows Ubisofts new mantra of ‘release all the old stuff again and they’ll pay for it twice’. Hey, I’m not complaining! Source: IGN

An Amazon France listing seems to have confirmed the first third party ‘HD Collections’. The listing (above) seems to show that Ubisoft are set to release Splinter Cell and Prince Of Persia trilogies on PS3. There’s no real details in the listings, other than a November 2nd release date and a 39 Euro price tag. There’s no real details as to what the trilogies will contain, but one can only assume that they’ll follow the formula Sony have laid out of HD graphics and trophies. Adding online multiplayer to the older Splinter Cell titles would definitely be a plus. There’s been rumors abound about a number of high-profile series’ becoming HD collections recently. Could this be a GamesCom announcement?

The Sands Of Time series is one of my favorite videogame series of all time. When Ubisoft showed off the 2008 re-imagining of Prince Of Persia I was a little disappointed. It turned out well and, even after that ending, I enjoyed myself. I was even looking forward to the next iteration of the cel-shaded, Nolan North-infused title. With the Sands Of Time movie in cinemas (well, maybe not any more), Ubisoft went back to their original prince for another sand-based tale.Ubisoft Montreal have pulled out all the stops to make sure The Forgotten Sands is the game fans of last generation’s games hoped it could be. Gone is the cel-shaded art style that was such a point of contention, the voice of the original prince (Yuri Lowenthal) replaces Nolan North and the, time-altering, ‘Sands’ are back. However, don’t go thinking this is just a cheap movie cash in – it’s far from that. I’m sure the movie had some part to play in the return to this lore, but everything here is cannon and nothing is based on the movie. The game takes place between The Sands Of Time and The Two Thrones, so you can expect a typically perky, upbeat lead character and not the dark, brooding prince from later games. Here The Prince is off to find his brother, Malik – a king in the middle of battle. It’s not the perfect time for a family reunion, but our hero desperately tries to find his brother as the invaders take over his land. Malik turns to desperate measures to defend his kingdom and his brother is thrown into a quest to save him and the kingdom from a mythical sand army. It’s typical videogame fare, but I was pretty happy with the storytelling and when you’re dealing with time-altering sand, you tend to suspend your disbelief anyway. There’s a good few twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes. The characters are pretty interesting and, overall, it’s pretty well paced. With games like this pacing is definitely an issue. They do tend to get bogged down in melodrama and, especially with the last game, traveling between areas does become a bit of a chore. Thankfully, that’s pretty much non-existent. The story is linear, but that’s not a bad thing. The story, combined with the level design, is always driving you towards your next goal. Of course, this isn’t a strightforward task. Each area is filled with the palace’s booby traps, some of which can take a bit of figuring out. They’re challenging for the most part, but none of them are controller throwingly frustrating. Ubisoft have struck a good balance here. Without it, this could’ve been a whole different experience. The pacing is also helped by the addition of new powers and an upgrade system. Throughout the game The Prince is granted a number of different elemental powers to help him on his quest. This is the only part of the game I...

This is the only part of the game I felt was similar to ‘POP 2008′, but wasn’t one that felt out of place. The new powers grant The Prince the ability to control the earth, fire, wind and water. These elements can be used during combat. For example: using your earth power makes you invulnerable for a short period of time. The most important of these powers is the ability to control water. Using this, our hero can freeze water in order to move up, along or jump from different surfaces. Combining this with other powers is one of the game’s key game mechanics, and they certainly create a number of interesting scenarios for the player to tackle. All of these can be upgraded with an XP system, but for the most part I didn’t notice that big of a change. Plus, with the amount of enemies on screen at a time I was fully upgraded well before the final battle and the system became redundant.

Aside from the puzzles, combat is a pretty big part of The Forgotten Sands. Combat itself is fairly simple stuff: You’ve got one button to swing your sword, one button to melee and another to dodge. However, it’s kept fresh with the introduction of new, and increasingly tougher, enemies. This system, like the one used for upgrades, works well until about three quarters through the game. By that point your character is so powerful he can take down the toughest of enemies in a few hits and armored enemies are as simple to kill as any other. This is a great way of making you feel the power The Prince possesses, but combat did become stale and turned into me mashing the attack button.

Speaking of enemies, it looks great when you see a swarm of sand monsters on screen at once. The problem is, they’re all the same model doing the same animations and, after a while, the ‘wow factor’ is gone. Graphically, the game is pretty hit and miss. It was created on the Assassins Creed II engine, so when it looks good it looks really good. That said, you definitely notice when it looks it’s worst. The environments are fairly well detailed, but each new area seemed to borrow very heavily from the last and it was very rare an area felt fresh to me. The character model of The Prince is good and the way the camera scales to show him in comparison to the environment was great. However, the camera was probably the biggest fault the game has. In trying to be cinematic, it can make puzzles hard to figure out and the simplest of jumps can become frustratingly hard.

Outside of the main story, Ubisoft have included a challenge mode. However, this is pretty simple to beat if you’re good at the combat – and by the end of the game, you should be. There’s also a time trial, but this needs to be unlocked via UPlay (Ubisofts own points system). To keep content like that locked behind an arbitrary points system, seems a little shady to me. At least it’s a separate piece of content and nothing to do with the main game, is all I can say.

Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is a game that really surprised me. I thought Ubisoft had left it to die, releasing it when they did. On second thoughts, maybe they wanted to release a great game in the summer, when nothing was out. Well that’s exactly what they did do. The Forgotten Sands is definitely not ‘Game Of The Year’ material, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and think everyone should give it a chance.

When the rumor first started circling that multiplayer Assassins Creed could be on the horizon, I was more than skeptical. Having played both AC and AC 2, I really couldn’t see how the mechanics would or could transfer over into a multiplayer setting. It’s safe to say, from what I played, Ubisoft have pulled it off and Brotherhood could have one of the most interesting multiplayer modes for some time. The premise is simple, but makes for a really cool experience. You pick a character – all of whom have different weapons and abilities – and are placed into a map with seven other players. Each player is assigned a target, another human player. The objective is to track down and kill your target, before you are assassinated by the guy chasing you. The maps are filled with similarly attired NPC’s, so your target isn’t all that easy to spot. This made for a cool game mechanic, but seeing the exact same character model over and over kind of got on my nerves a little bit. A compass at the bottom of the screen directs you where to go, and as you get closer a meter fills up to let you know just how close you are. There’s no real fighting, no shooting, you just have to assassinate your target quickly and quietly. This makes a change from the majority of titles on the market. It’s a simple game of cat and mouse that works perfectly with all the running, jumping and stabbing gameplay mechanics that make Assassins Creed what it is. Each time you respawn you are given the choice of character. This is purely aethetic, each character has the same skill set, but you can adopt two special abilities to make the character-for one round at least- your own. Each of the characters are civivilians, but I can see this being expanded via in-game unlocks and downloadable content. In my two rounds, I could see how easily addictive this mode could become. It’s definitely not enough to sell the game though. Call Of Duty or Battlefield this is not. Then again, I don’t think anyone expected it to be. I think for people to really grasp what Brotherhood’s multiplayer is all about, some kind of beta or demo is in order. Think on, Ubisoft.
