Sony: Don’t Use Your PS3′s Until We Say So

After a night of silence and PS3-based madness Sony have finally spoken up – telling owners of non-slim PS3′s to avoid using their consoles until they say it’s safe to do so.

A post on the PlayStation Blog has confirmed that it is the system’s internal clock that’s causing the game-crashing problems. The post also puts some kind of time frame on when we can expect to be able play our beloved black box again – “within the next 24 hours”.

In addition to this, the post warns ‘phat’ PS3 owners that using their console could result in loss of trophies and data – some of which won’t be recoverable. You can read Sony’s full statement after the jump.

Official statement from Sony:

“As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

“We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

“Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

“We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

“As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Hey Sony remember that (DRE) lawsuit?

  2. Ian Ball on Monday 1, 2010

Hey Ant, looks like Sony have cocked up big time on this one. I think I will use my PS3 for PlayTv but thats it. The bloody thing has been on since midnight when the leap year glitch kicked in so i guess if its corrupted stuff it will already be done.

I’m assuming its a hardware issue rather than a firmware issue as it is not affecting the slims but all PS3′s use the same firmware version 3.15. I guess they redesigned the digial clock system for the slims hence them escaping this debacle. As such I would suspect that Sony are looking for a way round the hardware to avoid recalling all the affected PS3s.

    Nice one Sony!!!!!! cocks!!!!!!!

  6. Gabriel on Monday 1, 2010

How does a multi- billion dollar company let this happen :/

  7. Killphil on Monday 1, 2010

Man, this kind of feels like some indirect advertising. “Our fat ps3′s are messed up, but if you have the NEW SLIM model you can still get your gaming fix on”. What’s with the system segregation? Sheesh. I don’t have my MW 2 trophies anymore, not that it matters, I just checked and I still have the save data. I’m not touching my ps3 cuz’ some titles I have on there I could never get again.

  8. Deana on Monday 1, 2010

I hear a law suit coming Sony, if no justice is made for lost data, I have 60.00 worth of games i purchased online and now shows I never did??? Do I hear refund Sony???? If not…….

  9. Outwitt on Monday 1, 2010

  10. Milosh habib on Monday 1, 2010

i had no idea about this and guess what…. all my trophies and all my data was corrupted and i dont really know how to fix it since im only 14 so i would really appreciate it if you could get it fixed. I cant even get on to play any online games anymore and it wont even let me play MW2 story mode, i cant pretty much do anything so GET THIS SHIT FIXED!!!!

  11. dawoodyone on Monday 1, 2010

This is retarded. PlayStation needs to get this resoled soon otherwise Xbox sales will skyrocket. I’ve been a PlayStation fan since day one but if this is what I have to expect from their next generation system I might just start looking else where. A simple clock error shouldn’t keep me from playing games off line or destroy my achievements.

  12. Ian ball on Monday 1, 2010

But I suspect u have voided warranty… Sony have promised a fix within 24 hours. Sit tight guys and I’m sure this royal f up will get sorted.

  14. Starkyn on Monday 1, 2010

This is the way that I see it. The company has done really well in ensuring their products stability. I have had my PS3 for close to 4 years now. Nary a glitch to be seen. I practically use this machine for every kind of entertainment there is. Not to mention I am running it at 12 hours a day on average. Basically it’s the most badass piece of game tech there is right now. This isn’t to say that they shouldn’t offer some recompense for the inconvenience. All things considered, one mistake isn’t a deal breaker. Even one this obnoxious.

  15. Outwitt on Monday 1, 2010

My warrenty has been voided for quite some time now, my ps3 is going on 4 years old. But your right definitly do not do this if your warrenty is still intact

  16. Ian ball on Monday 1, 2010

  18. Ian ball on Monday 1, 2010

Encue.. I suspect it involves opening the beast up… I would approach with extreme caution!!! Patience man!! Lol

  19. Deana on Monday 1, 2010

I feel that Sony failed to contact their customers and make us aware so WE DIDN”T TURN THE DAMN THINGS ON. As a online user and they have my freakin email address, they couldn’t even notify me to make me aware. and hello…we do have news stations???? Sony, for now I will trust and believe that you will make good of any customers who have corruption, if you don’t, I for see your company going under like all the rest.

  20. Matt Spackey on Monday 1, 2010

Guess Im Going To XBOX Sorry Sony, You Guys Suck All My Data is Gone, I Do Not Have One Puchased Item That Isnt Corrupted,m I Spent Over $2,000 On PSN, I Want Re-embursed!!

i want them to do something about this because i want back online and also it wont even let me play any of my games. either get this fixed NOW! or i am no longer purchasing or using any sony products.

  22. Outwitt on Monday 1, 2010

Side note…when i did get mine working again…all my files were there and trophies were fine…they were saying corrupted before i did the fix…but your right wait for sony to fix it for you all..

  23. Deana on Monday 1, 2010

    1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch. Then power back on.

    2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps. And that should turn it on and then off.

    3. power it back on after holding power button then set the date and time via internet.

This seemed to fix everything for me.

  24. Milosh habib on Monday 1, 2010

what i also just noticed is that in all of this writing that they have done on their blog, they mention the name slim ps3 many many of times. hmmmm almost as if they are saying forget about the biggie ps3s and

  28. Brent on Monday 1, 2010

Starkyn- I agree, Sony os by far the best! They will fix it, if it was anything to big, they would have it on the news, to them it’s more than likely an easy fix…. IF not, I’ll look the other way, of all the years I’ve had Sony, never a problem!! I think we’ll be ok!

  29. Mike E. on Monday 1, 2010
