Review: Zuma

Zuma is a game that i’veĀ been playing for some time. I’ve had it on my computer, on my cell phone, and now on the big screen with the Playstation 3.It’s always been a great, simple, and addictive game. Has that changed on it’s transfer to the home console?
It has changed….for the better. Playing this game on a big screen works phenomenally. First of all, everything can be seen easier and picking shots is much easier. If you’ve never played Zuma, here’s how it goes. You have a, for lack of a better word “orb turret” in the middle, and you have to shoot colored orbs at other colored coming your way before they reach you. The more you get in one shot, the higher your score. There are also special orbs that you can hit that can reverse the orb flow, slow it down, etc. Its a lot easier said than done to be honest, as the later levels will drive you crazy if your not a Zuma veteran. But hey, with practice you can get there.
The game plays pretty well on the Playstation 3 controller. You use the left analog stick to aim your shots and X to fire. Simple. The controls surprisingly take a little getting used to but after about ten minutes it will feel natural. Other than that, it’s the same game you’ve played various times.
Graphically, the game looks the best it possibly can. It never hiccups, no frame rate drops, looks smooth. That said, it’s an extremely simple looking game. That’s fine though, it doesn’t really need to look amazing. Maybe an HD version with an updated look will eventually come out? Hey, it worked for games like Bionic Commando and Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, why can’t it work here.
Overall, after all of the great things that have been said about it, is it really worth $10? It’s somewhat down the middle here. Some people will instantly love it, others will…..not. I like it a whole lot, so I’d say pick it up if you’re a fan of Zuma. Definitely do not chose it over games like Flower, Bionic Commando, etc. There are much more worthy games that deserve a spot in your collection.
