Impressions: WET

I’ve now had time to play Artificial Mind & Movements latest title, WET. I had not much knowledge of what this game was going to be prior to playing it. Overall, it’s a mixed bag. Hit the jump and read on.

WET is a very stylized title. Think somewhere along the lines of Kill Bill meets Smokin’ Aces. You play Rubi Malone, a mercanary of sorts whose adept with guns and a sword. In the demo, an illegal deal is occuring as you watch from overhead. Two men are trading items for cash. As video game cliche goes, one man backstabs the other and runs off with everything. It’s now your job to get the man who ran away, and kill all of his henchman in your path.

You’ll learn how to use your guns, your blade, and then you’re off to slaughter. This was all pretty normal, nothing really felt new enough to set it apart from other games. Well, until you get blood all over your face. All of the sudden, Rubi became angry. The game turned red, white, and black, and the murderous spree began. Although this was my favorite part of what I’ve played of WET, I feel like this is the only thing it really has going for it. Also, I fear that this will happen too often during the course of the full game. This really cool looking, fun little section could become a repetitive, mundane task. Lets hope that doesn’t happen.

Gameplay wise, WET is decent. Everything controlled well, but nothing really felt that original. This style of wall running we’ve seen in games like Shinobi or Prince of Persia. The hack-n-slash that occurs throughout have been recycled in way too many a game, and it’s just starting to get old. Now the shooting and acrobatics of the game is whats got me mad.

Holy Stranglehold rip-off. I could not get through 10 seconds of this game without thinking of John Woo’s Stranglehold (which I was a big fan of). Jumping and shooting feels exactly like Stranglehold. The slow motion that occurs when you are shooting during an acrobatic feels….exactly like Stranglehold. Even the premise for the story feels like it could of been inspired by Stranglehold. Maybe I’m crazy, but anyone who played and loved John Woo’s Stranglehold will feel the same way.

As for WET’s presentation, it’s love/hate for me thus far. I really like the pace that the music sets, and the amount of blood never hurt. From a technical perspective, the game is mediocre. Nothing here caught my eye as impressive. We’ll see when the full game comes out.

If I had to guess, I’d say I definitely could not reccomend WET as of now. I like the style the game brings, but the fact that nothing here is original really and that it blatantly rips off another game just makes this so hard to like. I’d reccomend everyone go back and play John Woo’s Stranglehold. It’s basically a much better version of WET.
