The long awaited RPG Fallout 3 has finally gone gold. For those of you who don’t know much about the game or it’s developer, hit the jump for a quick fill-in.

Bethesda Softworks are the developers (The same guys who made the award-winning “Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” for the Xbox 360 and PC, and later PS3.) who, well, developed Fallout 3. Fallout 3 is an RPG set in post apocalyptic Washington D.C. All we know of the story is that you are on a quest to find your father, and that your moral values will be put in check numerous times throughout the story. The game it self, not just the story, is truly monstrous. The story and side quests together will last you over 100 hours, and there is a ridiculous amount of land, tunnels, stores and more to explore.

Ouch.

Read further and then look at this picture, you'll understand what I mean by "Bloody Glory".

Fallout 3 is similar to the Elder Scrolls games, but there are new elements added to make it it’s own game. The V.A.T.S. (Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System) addition really changes up typical RPG elements. You can play the whole game without using this, I’m just not sure why you wouldn’t use it. What V.A.T.S. does is really a cool feature. Time basically stops, and you have the opportunity to pick on the enemies body where you want your shot to hit. Be that arm, leg, torso or head, each part of the body has a percentage on which the shot will actually hit. Obviously, the torso is going to be easy to hit and the head will have less of a percentage of getting shot. But, as you would expect, the head is going to critically damage or kill the enemy much more quickly. Also, you’ll get the chance to watch your shot in all of it’s bloody glory. Other than that, it’s what you would expect out of an RPG. Completing side quests, following the story line, killing anything in your way basically will get you to level up. As you level up and get farther in the game, you will gain perks. The perks system has many ways of customizing your character even further, and picking up different weapons and armor will obviously add to that customization.

Visually, from what we’ve seen, the game looks very impressive, especially considering the scope of the game. The amount you can see is incredible, and it manages to look great in the mean time. Don’t expect Crysis caliber graphics, but it’s graphical and technical work does it justice. Let’s just hope there’s no (or not as many) frame rate drops or random load times like Oblivion had.

Fallout 3 releases on October 28th in the US and October 31st in EUR. Pick it up, it’s looking to be a contender for game of the year.
